EMIDD
The Information Systems Engineering group received a grant by the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection for researching technical approaches to consent management in the internet of things (IoT). Individual, informed, specific, and explicitly given consent is one of the core pillars of data protection law. Traditionally, this consent has been expressed through written statements or tick-boxes following lengthy privacy statements. In the context of the IoT – with its lack of traditional user interfaces and the myriad of possibilities for reusing already collected data for desirable additional purposes – this approach is obviously not viable anymore. Instead, novel approaches for technoloically supported consent management are needed. The project EMIDD (abbreviated for German „Einwilligungsmanagement für das Internet der Dinge“), starting in April 2017 and lasting 15 months, will explore the possibilities for such technological approaches that meet the requirements of current and upcoming data protection law.
