Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Tai

Stefan Tai is Full Professor and Head of Chair Information Systems Engineering at TU Berlin, Germany (2014-present). Prior to that, he was a Full Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany (2007-2014) and a Research Staff Member at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York, USA (1999-2007). He also held concurrent posts as Director of research labs, including the FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik in Karlsruhe and Berlin, Germany (2008-2014). He earned his Diploma (1995) and Ph.D. (1999) degrees from TU Berlin, Germany.
Stefan specializes on creating next-generation distributed software systems that provide a necessary foundation to address larger societal challenges. His research interests include blockchain technology, software system qualities of cloud services, and the Web as a platform for technology, social, and business innovation.
Stefan has published over 120 peer-reviewed research articles. His most recent book is on Cloud Service Benchmarking (Springer, 2017), with David Bermbach and Erik Wittern (both PhD graduates from Stefan’s team). Stefan was involved in a number of industrial developments (mostly with IBM) and holds several patents in the area of enterprise middleware and Web services. Stefan acts as advisor to global IT companies and as mentor to start-up companies. He is a member of four editorial boards of leading scientific journals in the field and serves regularly as member of technical program committees of major international conferences. Stefan also serves as expert evaluator for national science foundations and programs across the world.
Stefan has over 20 years of experience in cutting-edge IT research and development. Throughout his career, he received several innovation and university teaching awards. Since his return to academia in 2007, Stefan was awarded >8 Mio. Euro total in research grants as principal investigator. So far, nine PhD students successfully completed their dissertation under his supervision at KIT and TU Berlin.
